Orignator of The Red Thread Project® is artist Lindsay Obermeyer of Chicago, IL. Obermeyer employs the history and metaphors surrounding textile practices to study diverse issues including parenting, environmentalism, medical ethics and gender. For Obermeyer, knitting is a perfect metaphor for society. When a stitch is dropped, the fabric may unravel. Ignore or shun connections to others and one's community becomes less stable.

Obermeyer's work has been exhibited throughout the United States at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (MA), the Milwaukee Art Museum (WI), and the Museum of Arts and Design (NY) among others. It has been included in five traveling exhibitions and has shown in Australia, Columbia, Italy, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Books and publications featuring her work include Newsweek, American Craft, Fiberarts, Knitting Art: 150 Innovative Works from 18 Contemporary Artists, Knitting in America: A Glorious Heritage from Warm Socks to High Art, and Reinventing Textiles: Gender and Identity. She holds a BFA and MFA in fiber art and an MAT in elementary education. Her web address is
